This Friday, February 1st, is World Read Aloud Day. St. Maria Goretti Catholic School plans to celebrate this day as part of our Student Appreciation Day during Catholic Schools Week. We have planned some fun all-school activities to continue to promote and encourage reading, and will also have a few drawings for gift cards to Half-Priced Books throughout the morning. As well, we will use this day to kick off our first annual 28-Day Read-Aloud Challenge.
Much has been written about the importance and benefits of reading aloud to children. In addition to exposure to rich vocabulary, reading aloud can help to increase a child’s attention span, develop stronger listening skills, and encourage an appetite for reading (Matthiessen, 2017). The 28-Day Read-Aloud Challenge is one way the St. Maria Goretti Catholic School hopes to continue to foster a love of reading.
Attached, you will find directions and a calendar that your child should use to participate in the challenge. Briefly, the goal is for each student to read aloud for at least 10 minutes per day. Students can read to anyone: a sibling, a parent, a grandma, a stuffed animal, a pet. Pre-readers can look at pictures and tell a story. The point is to encourage oral reading. Students who complete the challenge will be eligible to win prizes in a drawing that will take place on Monday, March 4th during our monthly Monday Morning Assembly when we will also be celebrating Read Across America Day! Ideas and information about the challenge and reading aloud with your children can also be found on the school’s website at www.smgschool.org.
We hope you will join us and encourage your student to take part in the St. Maria Goretti Catholic School 28-Day Read Aloud Challenge!
Happy Reading!
