Each year, SMG students in grades 5-8 are invited to participate in the National Geographic Geography Bee. Students will compete in a 7 round Preliminary competition in December to determine the 10 students to complete the school competition. The school conducts a GeoBee and names a school champion in January. The school champion takes a proctored, online qualifying test and the top 100-ranked students in each state qualify to represent their school at the State GeoBee competition. State champions are then invited to compete in the national championship.
Each year, students in grades 3-8 are invited to participate in the Scripps Spelling Bee. This spelling bee is unique in that the spelling words are made up entirely of words that are found in grade-appropriate fiction and nonfiction books. In January, a school wide spelling bee is conducted and the top 3 spellers are identified. The winner of the school bee goes on to compete in the Area Bee which takes place in February. If the student wins there, they go on to compete at the Regional Bee, which will be held this year on the Texas Christian University (TCU) campus on March 24, 2020.
