SMG ROBOTICS CLUB

Our Robotics Club students are members of the First Lego League (FLL).  Our Club consists of 20 students from 5^th-8^th grades divided into teams.

We meet weekly from August-December for 90 minutes and once a month for 3 hours on Saturdays.

What is FIRST LEGO League? 
Tomorrow’s innovators practice imaginative thinking and teamwork. Guided by adult Coaches, FIRST LEGO League teams research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS^® technology, then compete on a table-top playing field.

It all adds up to tons of fun while they learn to apply science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM), plus a big dose of imagination, to solve a problem. Along with their discovery journey, they develop critical thinking and team-building skills, basic STEM applications, and even presentation skills, as they must present their solutions with a dash of creativity to judges.

CITY SHAPER CHALLENGE

What if you could build a better world? Where would you begin? SMG teams will compete on Saturday, November 23, 2019.

First Lego League competitions consist of 4 main events:

1. Robot Games – Three 2 ½ minute matches, where the robot is programmed to run autonomously to complete as many missions as possible and accumulate points 
2. Robot Design and Strategy presentation – 10-minute session in which teams present the robots they built and programmed for the Robot Game, and explain to judges their design and strategy
3. Core Values – a 10-minute session in which teams are given an activity to demonstrate their teamwork, problem solving skills and other Core Values central to the mission of FIRST® programs*
4. Research Project

• Identify a problem when people and animals interact 
• Design a solution that makes the interaction better for animals, people, or both 
• Share your problem and solution with others
